Why Snowbird Cannabis Is Closing: The Federal Hemp Ban Explained

A plain-language guide to the federal hemp law, why it closes our doors, and what to do before our last day

Snowbird Cannabis | 632 N Indiana Ave, Englewood, FL | Updated October 15, 2026

The short version

  • Our last day is Saturday, November 28, 2026. After that, Snowbird Cannabis is closed for good.
  • Why: on December 11, 2026 a new federal law changes what counts as hemp. Any product with more than 0.4 milligrams of total THC per package stops being legal hemp. That is nearly everything we sell.
  • Until then: everything is on sale and prices keep coming down until the shelves are empty.
  • Snowbird Bucks: spend them before November 28. They cannot be used after the store closes.
  • 21+ only, as always. Bring your ID.

What actually happened

In November 2025, Congress attached a new definition of hemp to the bill that reopened the federal government. The old definition, from the 2018 Farm Bill, is the one every hemp shop in the country was built on: a product counted as hemp if its delta-9 THC was under 0.3% by dry weight.

The new definition counts total THC, including the form of THC found in raw flower that only becomes active when it is heated. It also adds a second test for finished products: no more than 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container. Anything over that line is no longer hemp under federal law.

The law gave the industry a year, with an effective date of November 12, 2026. On September 2, 2026, a short-term funding bill moved most of it to December 11, 2026. A narrower rule, for cannabinoids that the cannabis plant cannot make on its own, still starts on November 12.

What the 0.4 mg line means in practice

0.4 milligrams is a tiny amount. A single 5 mg gummy has more than ten times that. Every flower, joint, vape, gummy, chocolate and drink on our shelves is over the line, and there is no way to reformulate a THC product around it. Products over the line are treated under federal law like marijuana, with everything that means for selling them, shipping them and taking card payments for them.

Why that means we are closing

A store like ours only works because federal law treats these products as hemp. Once that changes on December 11, we cannot keep selling what we sell, so we have decided to close rather than wait for it. Our last day open is Saturday, November 28, 2026.

Between now and then, our goal is simple: get everything on the shelves into the hands of the people who have supported us. That is why prices are dropping across the store, and why they will keep dropping as November goes on.

What you can do before November 28

  1. Shop the sale. Prices are already marked down across the store, with more drops to come. See everything on sale.
  2. Use your Snowbird Bucks. Your balance is spending money in the store and online. Ask at the register, or online look right above where you enter your credit/debit card at checkout. Check your balance.
  3. Check the lab results. Every product has its lab report linked on its page, so you know exactly what you are buying.
  4. Tell your representatives what you think. Two minutes on house.gov and senate.gov. Congress is still debating whether to regulate these products instead of banning them.

Thank you, Englewood

To everyone who walked through our door, asked questions, came back the next week, and told a friend: thank you. Running Snowbird has been a pleasure because of you. Come say goodbye before November 28.

The facts, for reference. Snowbird Cannabis's last day: Saturday, November 28, 2026. Federal effective date: December 11, 2026 (originally November 12, 2026; delayed by the funding bill signed September 2, 2026). Federal threshold: 0.4 mg of total THC per container. All products are hemp-derived, lab tested, and sold to adults 21 and over.

Nothing here is legal advice; it is our honest read of the law as of the date above.
